Wikipedia - Superettan

Superettan (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈsʉ̂ːpɛrˌɛtːan]; meaning the super first (division)) is an association football league and the second highest league in the league system of Swedish men's football. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Allsvenskan and Division 1. Seasons run from April to October, with teams playing 30 matches each, totalling 240 matches in the season.

The league was created in 2000. The second tier of Swedish football had previously consisted of a varying number of regionalized leagues operating under the Division 2 (1924–1986) and Division 1 (1987–1999) names.

The Sweden Superettan is the second tier of professional football in Sweden, serving as a crucial stepping stone for clubs aspiring to reach the top-flight Allsvenskan. Established in 2000, the tournament features a competitive league format where teams battle it out over a season that typically runs from April to November.

Comprising 16 teams, the Superettan showcases a mix of established clubs and ambitious newcomers, all vying for promotion to the Allsvenskan. Each team plays 30 matches, facing every other team twice—once at home and once away—accumulating points to determine their standings on the league table. The top two teams at the end of the season earn direct promotion, while the teams finishing in the lower ranks face the threat of relegation to the third tier, Division 1.

The Superettan is known for its passionate fan base, vibrant matchday atmospheres, and the potential for thrilling upsets, making it a captivating league for both players and supporters. It serves as a platform for emerging talent, with many players using the Superettan as a launchpad for their careers in higher leagues, both domestically and internationally.

With its rich history and competitive spirit, the Sweden Superettan continues to be a vital part of Swedish football, contributing to the development of the sport in the country and providing fans with exciting matches and memorable moments.
