Wikipedia - Liga Leumit

The Israeli Liga Leumit (Hebrew: הליגה הלאומית, HaLiga HaLeumit, lit.'National League') is the second division of the professional Israeli association football (soccer) league system. This second-tier league is placed directly below the Israeli Premier League.

History

Liga Leumit came into existence at the start of the 1955–56 season, replacing Liga Alef as the top division in Israeli football. However, it was usurped as the top flight in the 1999–2000 season, when it was replaced by the Premier League. Since then it has operated as the second tier in the Israeli football league system.

The Israel Leumit Liga, also known as the Israeli National League, is the second tier of professional football in Israel. Established in 1955, the league serves as a competitive platform for clubs aspiring to ascend to the top tier, the Israeli Premier League. Featuring a diverse array of teams from across the country, the Leumit Liga showcases emerging talent and provides a vital stepping stone for players and clubs alike.

The tournament operates on a traditional league format, where teams compete in a round-robin system, playing each other twice—once at home and once away. Points are awarded for wins and draws, with the top teams at the end of the season earning promotion to the Premier League, while the bottom teams face relegation to the Liga Alef, the third tier of Israeli football.

The Leumit Liga is known for its passionate fan base, vibrant matchday atmospheres, and the potential for thrilling upsets, making it an exciting competition for both players and supporters. Each season, the league not only highlights the rich football culture of Israel but also serves as a crucial development ground for the nation’s future stars. With a mix of historic clubs and ambitious newcomers, the Israel Leumit Liga continues to be a significant part of the Israeli football landscape.
