The Azerbaijan First League (Azerbaijani: I Liqa) is the second highest professional division in Azerbaijani professional football. The league is run by AFFA. The winner of the league is promoted to the top-tier Azerbaijan Premier League.

History

Due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all Azerbaijan clubs of the former Soviet Premier Division and Soviet First Division conformed a single Azerbaijan Premier League, which meant that the new second tier of Azerbaijan football would remain regionalized. For the first two seasons three regional groups conformed the second tier, until in 1994 the single table in use today began to be used.

The Azerbaijan Division 1 is the second tier of professional football in Azerbaijan, serving as a competitive platform for emerging clubs and talented players aspiring to reach the top flight. The tournament features a dynamic league format where teams compete throughout the season to secure promotion to the Azerbaijan Premier League, while striving to avoid relegation to lower divisions. Known for its passionate fan base and vibrant football culture, Azerbaijan Division 1 showcases a mix of experienced squads and promising young talent, making it an exciting and vital component of Azerbaijani football development. The league emphasizes competitive spirit, skill, and teamwork, contributing significantly to the growth of the sport within the country.
